Dead Fantasy Contest: Surveyor

Now presenting....Surveyor Dress Sphere Rikku!

This is an entry for 's contest to design an original dress sphere for Rikku for Dead Fantasy III. I was inspired to enter by two awesome dress sphere ideas. Go look at them! They're much cooler than mine: [link] and [link]

No, it's not just for taking her opponent's measurements. Except that it is.

Okay, before you shoot me for that terrible pun, let me explain the idea behind this dress sphere. The idea's a bit...different, but I think it could fit in a fighting movie.

This dress sphere is almost entirely for support-based attacks. As such, it would be more useful in a party setting, but could also be used in multi-dress sphere combos. She can fight with the compass (which is shown roughly to scale with Rikku), but mainly she uses the compass and sextant to take measurements and get stats of the terrain and the enemy. I was thinking something along the lines of either something where she marks off an area on the ground which could be used with the next dress sphere's special ability, or getting 100% dodge or accuracy for a short amount of time.

In my head she was plotting things with gold lines that she drew with the compass and flew out of the scopes on the sextant. Or something.

For the outfit I tried to stay mainly within the bounds of similar classes in other Final Fantasy games. As some of you may have noticed, there aren't really too many of them. The weapon ideas were inspired by the measures in FFXII. The main costume inspiration was Scholar in FFIII. As such, it's not particularly battle practical (not that most video game outfits are, but I digress). It had to be reminiscent of the academic, but cute and preferably not too stereotypically so.

The pieces of the outfit are interchangable; I just didn't draw every combination mainly to save space.

For the color scheme and weapon design, I tried to stay fairly close to Rikku's default outfit. The sextant would have a similar color scheme. As for the green one, that's just how the outfit design first occurred in my head, so I figured I'd put it there. The weird yellow-on-white shaded areas are supposed to be the same fabric used for her arm things in the default outfit. Please forgive the really quick shading.

The class idea itself was inspired by Calculator in FF Tactics. Just by the fact that it exists. I'm a bit of a nerd; what can I say?

The glasses are there to fit the stereotype of the job type. I imagined her throwing them away as part of the transformation sequence. That seems very Rikku to me.
